2nd Semester Work
Completed Yearbook Spreads
Final 2023 Reflection
I have contributed to a lot to the Quill Media this year. As always, I kept an ear out for stories, but I primarily helped with the yearbook. I helped start the yearbook at the beginning of the year with ideas, ladder ideas, and creating questions to ask a yearbook designer. From there, I helped continue designing the yearbook ladder so we knew what should be added to the year book and in what order. Once the ladder had been finalized, I helped with the yearbook spreads where I primarily helped with 10 spreads and gave some minor contributions to other spreads. The 10 spreads I worked on can be seen above. Some of the spreads were easier than others as I could pull from other sources that were easy for me to access, others were a bit harder like the IAM Music page where I had to go sit in on all of their classes to get good action shots of each class outside of their actual performances. The minor contributions I made were getting photos for other spreads or helping create even spaces between texts and photos on a page.
Other work I did besides the yearbook was covering stories, however, none of these seem to ever be published or the information wasn't used or good enough to create a story from or the story wasn't very relevant. If the information was posted somewhere else, like a social media page, then that is not something I know about.
Over the course of this year I have learned that a yearbook is a form of journalism. With a yearbook it's not simply a bunch of photos thrown together, but rather it's a story that's being told and a lot of information needs to be included while also being entertaining. This is just like journalism where you have to tell a story to the reader so that they can understand what is happening or has happened. Overall, journalism has many different mediums, but all are meant to help inform a group of people. This fills the role of helping people know and or understand what has, is, or going to happen and is a good source for people to refer to if it is created correctly.
During the time I have spent as a member of the AHS Quill, the Quill has helped me greatly in improving as a writer. In particular, I believe it has helped me in being able to research a topic, pull multiple forms of evidence together to create one picture, and to create a good and well written argument. It has also helped me learn how to take information and write in a way that is entertaining and interesting to a reader. I think these skills are reflected in my work during my senior year. For my senior thesis, I had to research multiple sources and pull information from each of those sources so I could fully understand a topic better and then create and argument for said topic. In my senior project, I also had to utilize the skill of storytelling and engaging a reader. My senior project was a children's book, so I had to write it in a way that was interesting to a reader while still sharing the information the story was meant to share. Overall, I think my success with these pieces of work can give some or most of the credit to the lessons I was taught in the Quill. If I had not needed to use these skills constantly or constantly get feedback on them, then I don't think I would have done as well as I did on the work. My growth in writing that I had gained from my time here will continue to impact me in the future as I continue to write many different pieces of work.
